Adventure Awaits:Tales Of The Little Blue & White Stick

Tales Of The Little Blue Stick

If someone had told my teenage self that a little blue-and-white stick would one day have the power to change my life, I would have laughed—out loud—and dismissed it without a second thought, with the attitude of, “What you talkin’ bout, Willis?” (yes, Different Strokes).

Back then—before the internet ruled everything, before sex education was openly discussed in public schools, and before questions could be answered with a quick search—there was very much a don’t ask, don’t tell sentiment surrounding bodies, love, and consequences. We simply didn’t talk about those things.

Life felt simpler then.

We sat around flipping through Teen BeatBridesGQ, and even our high school yearbooks, dreaming about the one. The boy who would sweep us off our feet. The one whose phone call—on a landline, sometimes even a party line with others breaking in—meant everything.

We could stay on the phone for hours, especially if our parents were out on date night on a Friday or Saturday. Sometimes even a random Saturday afternoon was enough. We talked about nothing and everything all at once. You could hear him smile through the receiver. No FaceTime needed. You just knew. You could actually hear his smile.

They called it puppy love—and it was wonderful.

Fast forward to adulthood. Marriage. Honeymoons. New beginnings./

And then reality quietly taps you on the shoulder.

Because when “Charles”—that monthly visitor every woman knows well—decides not to show up for the first time in your life, the laughter fades quickly. Charles not being there is not a thing. At least, he’s always been dependable.

Maybe it’s a month after an unexpected moment.
Maybe it’s right after your honeymoon.
Either way… you get the point.

That’s when the little blue-and-white stick makes its dramatic entrance.

Suddenly, the thing that was barely mentioned, rarely discussed, and never truly understood becomes the most important object in your world. Your mind races forward—when could this have happened? Then it rewinds—what happened, what was said, what was done, what did I do differently? And right behind those thoughts comes the bigger one:

How am I going to tell him? My parents? My husband?

The clock sounds louder in moments like that. Tick. Tock. Beating in your ears so loudly it refuses to be silenced. It’s as though your mind separates from your body as you move purely on motion.

You guzzle water like your life depends on it. You turn on the faucet. You hold your breath. You splash the blue-and-white stick. And because one is never enough, you repeat the process with the three extra blue-and-white sticks you bought—just in case.

Those little blue-and-white sticks have a way of rearranging everything. This is the test you hope to fail when your life, as you see it, feels unprepared.

Most girls grow up imagining how life will unfold. Who they’ll marry. When they’ll have children. How many…Under what circumstances. Some even plan it down to a timeline—career first, marriage next, then babies—neatly ordered and perfectly timed.

And for honeymooners, those plans often feel mutual, intentional, and agreed upon.

But life doesn’t always follow schedules.

If only the little blue-and-white stick would show up exactly when you were ready.
If only timing listened to logic—and plans.
If only control were truly ours.

Then you learn… God laughs.

But then again—if everything happened exactly as planned, would life really be an adventure?

That little blue-and-white stick doesn’t just bring answers. It brings change. It introduces uncertainty—for some, fear; for others, excitement—and a version of yourself you haven’t met yet.

And sometimes… It’s only the beginning.

Yet adventure awaits, because the power of the little blue-and-white stick is finally understood. And every woman, from every walk of life, has encountered it—even if the experience is rarely spoken aloud.
