Tales Of The Little Blue Stick

If someone had told my teenage self that a little blue-and-white stick would one day have the power to change my life, I would have laughed—out loud—and dismissed it without a second thought, with the attitude of, “What you talkin’ bout, Willis?” (yes, Different Strokes).

Back then—before the internet ruled everything, before sex education was openly discussed in public schools, and before questions could be answered with a quick search—there was very much a don’t ask, don’t tell sentiment surrounding bodies, love, and consequences. We simply didn’t talk about those things.

Life felt simpler then.

We sat around flipping through Teen Beat, Brides, GQ, and even our high school yearbooks, dreaming about the one. The boy who would sweep us off our feet. The one whose phone call—on a landline, sometimes even a party line with others breaking in—meant everything.
